POLICE searching for missing Wolston pensioner George Summerfield have today, Tuesday April 17, discovered the body of a male on farmland close to the village.

Although the body has not yet been formally identified it is believed to be that of 77 year old Mr Summerfield.

Mr Summerfield was reported missing on March 31 but had not been seen since March 29.

A police investigation has been ongoing, which has involved searches of the area and locations Mr Summerfield was known to visit.

Yesterday police resumed their search, using an underwater team for the River Avon and nearby lakes whilst officers and PCSOs searched neighbouring land.

DI Colin Jones said: “Shortly before 11am this morning members of the police search team discovered a body which we believe to be that of Mr George Summerfield, who has been missing for more than two weeks.

“The body was found in a ditch on farmland close to the village. It has now been recovered and the formal identity process can be carried out. The coroner has been informed.

“Warwickshire Police stepped up its search for Mr Summerfield yesterday to re-visit areas we had previously searched and to make sure that nowhere was missed. We were determined to find Mr Summerfield, though were hoping that it would be in better circumstances than this.

“I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in and supported our investigation over the past two and a half weeks, including members of the local community and the media. I am very grateful.”
