The political row over children’s centres continued this week after Rugby’s Labour parliamentary candidate Claire Edwards said the Conservatve-run authority “should be ashamed of itself” for cutting the children’s centre budget by 30 per cent.

Warwickshire County Council Cabinet is set to make a decision on restructuring Warwickshire Children’s Centres at a meeting today. Labour is lobbying for a two group model in Rugby, rather than the one group option recommended by officers and favoured by Conservatives

Claire Edwards said: “We hear about children not being ready for school – but instead of putting in resources to tackle this in Warwickshire, the county council has spent thousands offloading its responsibilities so centres will have to be run outside the council. It means vital staff will be transferred as if they were buildings or bits of furniture. The loss of expertise will be detrimental to the next generation and their families.”

Last week Conservative Cllr Mike Perry said: “We had a duty to recommend one of the three options on the table and only one option ensures all centres remain open. I was amazed that both Labour and the Lib Dems did not agree that no centre should close.”
