AT LEAST 23 schools in the Rugby borough are closed this morning (Wednesday) as teachers and other public sector workers go strike.

Teachers, police and fire staff, council workers and hospital staff have all walked out as a day of industrial action gets underway.

It is set to be the biggest day of strikes in the town for decades in a row over pensions.

RUGBY Borough Council (RBC) is expecting disruption to its bin collections today (Wednesday) and tomorrow (Thursday).

It is expecting to suspend green bin (garden waste and food) collections on Thursday (December 1) in order to allow workers to collect blue-lid bins (recyclables) that were missed on Wednesday (November).

Blue-lid Bin Collections - There will be limited collections on 30 November 2011. If we do not collect your bin please re-present your bin for collection before 7.30am on Thursday 1 December.

There will be changes to collections on Thursday 1 December. If we normally collect your bin on this day please ensure that it is presented ready for collection by 7.30am.

Black Bin Collections - No reported problems.

Green Bin Collections - There will be no Green Bin collection on Wednesday 30 November or Thursday 1 December. We will collect your waste on 14 or 15 December.

RBC is not currently anticipating any significant disruption to other council services. The Town Hall is open as usual.

North Street toilets will be closed today (Wednesday). The nearest alternative toilets are in Caldecott Park, the Clock Towers Shopping Centre, or the Town Hall.

Warwickshire County Council (WCC) is working to ensure disruption to services is kept to a minimum when public sector workers go on strike.

The strike is planned for all public sector workers because of planned changes to public sector pensions which will see workers’ contributions going up along with the retirement age being increased.

Where possible, managers have planned ahead to mitigate the impact of disruption through a range of measures such as distributing staff cover across teams, postponing non-essential leave, meetings and training.

Certain services have submitted exemption requests to the unions for staff due to the critical nature of the services provided – services which relate to those in the highest need such as vulnerable people.

Bob Perks, head of Human Resources, said: “Whilst we fully respect workers’ rights to strike, the council has a duty to provide a degree of service in several areas. We have worked to create a contingency plan to ensure vulnerable people still receive essential services.

“What we can also do is to provide residents with information so that they know what services will be affected. We are using all the communications channels we can to ensure that the public is fully informed.

The council is working closely with unions and, as more detail becomes available, will be providing a central source of information through and on Twitter @WarksDirect
