Rape prevention campaign kicks off across Warwickshire

Warwickshire Police are taking part in a new campaign aimed at helping people realise the definition of rape and when they are a victim.

Reports to the police show that nationally, there is an increase in the number of rapes committed during the warmer summer months - particularly among young people. The StopRapeNow campaign aimes to help address this problem.

Det Supt Graeme Pallister said: “If someone is too drunk to know what they are doing, then they cannot consent to sex and it is rape. Being drunk yourself is no defence either. A man can be raped too.”

A police spokeswoman added: “If you have sex with someone without their consent, it is rape. You will be arrested, charged and appear in court where you will face a jury.

“You will face a prison sentence, loss of your job, a criminal record and will be on the sex offenders register. You could face a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.”
