STAFF from the Advertiser are dusting down their trainers in preparation for Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life event on July 31.
Senior reporters Alice Dyer and Lucie Green will complete the 5k course at Whitehall Recreation Ground with sports editor Zoe Ashton.
“I took part in Race for Life in Coventry a few years ago with a few of my friends and really enjoyed it, so when I heard the event was coming to Rugby I was quite excited,” said Alice.
“A huge part of our job involves writing stories about other people in Rugby taking part in community events and fundraisers, so this is a great opportunity to join in with them and raise money for a great cause at the same time.”
She said cancer is a disease that touches so many lives.
“It always amazes me how positive people are who have cancer and how they just seem to cope with it.
“It will be a great way to remember all those who haven’t survived cancer, as well as helping those who have by raising money for Cancer Research UK.”
Zoe said she was keen to take part because it’s a community event for people with all levels of fitness.
“I’ve sponsored friends doing the Race for Life in other towns before, but never taken part. With the event on our doorstep there’s no excuse and it should be a really good day,” she said.
“Everyone knows someone who has had cancer or died from it, so I think it will actually be quite touching, but it’s a very easy way to raise lots of money for such a good cause.
“I’m looking forward to it, but despite being sports editor, I know I won’t be able to run the whole 5k. I’ll walk as fast as I can though!”
