Rugby brothers Cory and Zak McCafferty have raised hundreds of pounds in honour of their close family friend who is fighting cancer.

Gemma Keenan inspired the boys to take part in the Rugby Mini Millitary Mud Run in aid of Cancer Research UK.

She has battled cancer twice.

Cory, 10, who goes to Bilton Junior School and Zak, 6, a pupil at Bawnmore Infant School, said they wanted to do something to help other people with the disase.

“We thought it would be good fun to do the run and help charity,” said Cory.

Zak said: “It was a great day and we can’t wait to do it again.”

Cory completed the 5k in an hour and Zak was 1hr 15 mins.

Their mother, Lisa, said: “They loved it and want to do it again in August if possible, if not it will be next April again.

“Cory’s godmother has fought cancer twice now and this is very close to their hearts. They now stand at £600 raised.”

She added: “It was all their own idea and I feel very proud of them.”
