THE Rugby branch of CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) has joined the campaign to save the Haywaggon in Churchover from closing as a pub.

The owners of the pub have recenlty applied for planing permission to change the pub to a house, which stops it running as a freehouse.

Representatives from the local branch of CAMRA have met with protesters and have both lodged objections to Rugby Borough Council.

Steve Heighton from CAMRA said: “The pub is a classic country village pub with excellent beers and a quality restaurant specialising in Italian food. It also has planning permission to build bedrooms, so has real prospects being so close to the motorway.

“For the owners to close it would be a travesty. The pub should be sold as a going concern and we don’t believe this option has been looked at properly. We are urging people to visit the pub to see just how good it is. Objections can still be emailed into the council and we urge people to still do so.”

The branch is now waiting for the owner to return from holiday before trying to discuss the future of the pub.
