More details have been revealed about this year’s Christmas lights switch-on ceremony in Rugby.
Following last week’s announcement that the event will be headlined by the band Toploader, the organisers have released information about the full line-up.
They promise a dazzling array of entertainment on Sunday November 23, running from 10.30am to 5pm. There will be a funfair, children’s activities, live music, dance, games, Father Christmas, a Christmas market, fireworks and more.
Rugby FM’s Jason Moss will be lighting up the main stage from 12 noon to host live acts including White Men Can’t Funk, Me and My Shadow, Hill Street Studio Singers, Rugby Cadet Corps of Drums, the Salvation Army band with St Andrew’s Church Choir, Hayleys Impact Dance and the Choir Idol finals. The occasion will be headlined by Toploader, best known for their hit Dancing in the Moonlight.
For little ones, there will be Punch and Judy, balloon modelling, circus workshops, a bouncy castle, a mobile farm, face painting, arts and crafts, and a Santa’s Grotto. The funfair meanwhile will include all the usual favourites, plus the first ever Ferris Wheel in Rugby town centre.
Aftab Gaffar, managing director of organisers Rugby First, said: “Last year’s switch on had a significant impact on town centre trade and we are keen to repeat this success.
“Christmas is an extremely important time of year for local retailers and the Christmas light switch-on is just one of the ways Rugby First in partnership with other organisations is bringing people into the town centre and encouraging them to shop local. Don’t forget also that there will be free car parking in the John Barford car park on the day.”
Cllr Heather Timms, the Rugby borough councillor responsible for the economy, development and culture, said: “The Christmas lights switch on has become one of the major dates in Rugby’s calendar, attracting thousands of people to the town centre and creating the perfect festive atmosphere. This year’s switch on promises to be another spectacular event with entertainment on offer for all the family. It’s a great a day out and a fantastic opportunity to support our town centre this Christmas.”
