Housing 21, a leading provider of housing, care and health services for older people, has been granted planning permission for a new extra care development in Rugby.
The 61 unit mixed tenure scheme will be built in a partnership between Housing 21, Warwickshire County Council and Rugby Borough Council.
Apartments at the development, to be built on the site of the former Abbotsbury care home in Pettiver Crescent, will be available for rent, shared ownership and outright sale.
Extra Care housing enables older people to live independent lives with their own apartments but with help on hand, tailored to individual need.
Kris Peach, regional operations director for Housing 21 said: “We are very pleased that planning permission has been granted. This new extra care scheme will be a real boost for local people, providing quality accommodation for older people as well as a valuable community resource.”
The two bedroom apartments, designed for those aged 55 and over, will offer a secure door entry system with intercom to every apartment, a court manager service and an emergency call system.
Cllr Izzi Seccombe, Warwickshire County Council’s Portfolio Holder for Adult Social Care, added: “We are delighted to be involved in this project, both from a social care perspective and as providers of the land. This is a fantastic scheme which will give older generations the opportunity to live independently and safely in their own homes in the heart of the local community.”
The new development, which will be constructed by Willmott Dixon, will also provide a residents’ lounge, restaurant and hairdressing salon. It is one of five schemes that Housing 21 will be developing across Warwickshire with part funding from the Homes and Communities Agency. Housing 21
will also be delivering the care service at the scheme.
Rugby Borough Council has also supported the project. Cllr Leigh Hunt, portfolio holder for Sustainable Inclusive Communities, said: “I am pleased that this scheme has moved a step closer to being built. Rugby has a shortage of housing and schemes such as this, along with the nearby
redevelopment of Pettiver Crescent and other schemes such as the local authority mortgage scheme, are crucial in making sure that we have enough housing of a type that meets the needs of our residents.”
