A man has been sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty of a robbery in Rugby.

Sean Ryan, aged 24, of Holbrook Road, Rugby pleaded not guilty to the offence.

The incident involved a 79-year-old woman, who was badly injured and had her handbag stolen in Cross Street, Long Lawford on December 19 2015.

Following a three day trial at Coventry Crown Court, Ryan was found guilty of the robbery as well as four counts of burglary in Coventry.

He was sentenced to two years in prison for one of the burglaries and 18 months for each of the other three. The burglary sentences are to run concurrently with each other and consecutively with the robbery offence, making a total of seven years in prison.

Temporary Det Con Sean Whittaker, of Rugby CID, said: “Special thanks must go to out to the local community in Long Lawford who came forward and assisted police in the investigation and helped us to secure a conviction.”
