A RUGBY man has been given the opportunity of a lifetime to further his career in hospitality.

The Chester Grosvenor hotel in Chester is helping to nurture the hospitality industry’s top talent of tomorrow as part of a prestigious management training programme.

The luxury hotel is participating in the ‘Ten out of Ten’ project which helps young people enter the industry at the highest level, work in some of the UK’s best hotels and learn from the most well-respected chefs, sommeliers and managers.

The Chester Grosvenor’s first ‘Ten out of Ten’ participant is Alex Austin, 20, from Rugby in Warwickshire.

He said: “I only joined The Chester Grosvenor in September but I’ve already learned so much. I count myself really lucky to be on the ‘Ten out of Ten’ programme which is the Ivy League of hospitality management training programmes.”

Alex is currently working in the sales and marketing team at The Chester Grosvenor and helping with email broadcasts, developing the hotel website and producing marketing material.

The ‘Ten out of Ten’ programme gives 10 young people who are passionate about the hospitality industry the chance of a lifetime to work in 10 different hotels including Heston Blumenthal’s ‘The Fat Duck’ and Raymond Blanc’s ‘Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons’

Each of the ten young people complete a 25 month training programme covering all the core skills needed to run a successful hotel. These include working in the kitchen, restaurant, reception, housekeeping, HR and reservations.

Alex is no stranger to the hospitality industry as his parents, James and Claudia, run the Golden Lion Hotel, Easenhall, near Rugby.

He attended Bilton Grange, Warwickshire, and Millfield School in Somerset before taking a job as trainee sommelier at Chewton Glen, Hampshire, where he applied for the ‘Ten out of Ten’ programme.

Jonathan Slater, managing director of The Chester Grosvenor, said: “We are delighted to be taking part in ‘Ten out of Ten’ which is a wonderful investment in the rising stars of the hospitality industry.

“Each participant that joins The Chester Grosvenor will learn how to exceed the expectations of every guest or diner that comes through our front door.

“And that a great benchmark to set for themselves during the rest of their professional lives.”
