Rugby’s MP says that the cost of politics should not be going up - along with member’s salaries.
Mark Pawsey, who represents Rugby in parliament, has spoken out following a proposal to increase the salary for MP’s by around £6,000.
The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) says salaries should increase to £74,000 by 2015, but that perks should be cut and pensions made less generous.
Mr Pawsey said: “An Independent body, IPSA, is currently consulting on this matter with a view to what the position will be after the next general election. I believe that the cost of politics should not go up. It should go down and therefore MP’s pay should not be going up beyond the level of the public sector generally, while public sector pay is, rightly, being constrained. I hope that IPSA will take account of this when they bring forward their recommendations.”
