Rugby - your county council wants you to think how you move around

As we head into spring, Warwickshire County Council is continuing to encourage residents to change how they travel '“ and to do so safely.

The county council’s Choose How You Move campaign has been asking people living and working in Warwickshire to make a number of travel pledges that will help them stay safer, get healthier and improve their local environment, while also saving them money.

Rugby Cllr Peter Butlin, the county council’s portfolio holder for transport and planning, said: “We hope people will take the challenge and make their everyday journeys, such as their commute to work, better for themselves and for the environment.”

So far this year, the campaign has asked people to pledge to consider being friendlier to the environment by using more public transport, and to try out car-sharing for their journeys.

The latest Choose How You Move pledges are:

- I pledge to get genned up and find out how many bus and train services operate in my local area

You may be surprised at how many bus and train services operate in your local area, where they can take you to and how frequently they run! Get genned up on local knowledge, particularly if you are new to a neighbourhood.

Details of Warwickshire bus services, including timetables and route maps, can be found at www.warwickshire.gov.uk/buses. For information on all train journey services and times in Warwickshire, use National Rail’s Journey Planner at http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk.

- I pledge to keep my bicycle safe and get it registered on the national crime prevention database

If you’re worried about keeping your bicycle safe, why not get it registered on a national crime prevention database such as www.bikeregister.com?

Getting your bike security marked and registered is a visible deterrent to bike thieves. They know that if they are caught in possession of a registered bike, the rightful owner can be traced and they will be arrested.

- I pledge not to put myself or others at risk by driving my vehicle after drinking alcohol and to use public transport instead

Don’t put yourself or others at risk by driving your vehicle after drinking alcohol. Use public transport, including buses and trains, to get to and from your destinations, whether in Warwickshire or beyond. You may be surprised at how late some public transport services operate.

The county council is also encouraging residents to go to their Choose How You Move Twitter page (www.twitter.com/ChooseMoveWarks) and tell them which sustainable forms of transport they’re using for their everyday journeys in 2016, using the hashtags #ichooserail, #ichoosebus, #ichoosebike and #ichoosefoot.
