NOMINATIONS are being sought for heroes in Rugby to carry the Olympic torch on its route across the country.
The organisers of the 2012 Games are looking for 8,000 torchbearers to travel 300 metres each with the symbolic Olympic flame. The Olympic torch route will be announced in November, and it is hoped that it will proceed through Warwickshire.
Torchbearers get to keep their torch and outfit, and will be able to carry the flame in their area with the eyes of the world on them. Nominations are available to everyone, whatever their ability - so each torch bearer can run, walk, wheel or whatever before passing the flame to the next torchbearer.
Cllr Helen Walton, Warwickshire County Council’s spokeswoman for sustainable communities, said: “We are confident that the torch route will journey through our county and would like as many Warwickshire people as possible to be torchbearers.
“We are appealing for residents to nominate someone who has been an inspiration to them. This can be sporting related, music, charity work, caring, overcoming adversity - anything in fact that makes them a local hero.”
The organisers are hoping that around half of the 8,000 torchbearers will be young people, so if you know of anyone who deserves to be nominated through your work or home life - especially aged between 12 and 24 – please send in your nominations.
Information and how to nominate can be found on the website by visiting www.london2012.com/games/olympic-torch-relay/carrying-the-ol
You need to sum up in a short paragraph why the individual is being nominated. The closing date is 29 June, so do not delay making your nomination.
