VIRGIN will continue to run trains temporarily through Rugby while the West Coast Mainline franchise is resolved.

This follows the decision to cancel the First Group contract for the West Coast Mainline, announced by the Government this morning (Wednesday).

Rugby MP Mark Pawsey said he was shocked by the news.

“I’ve spoken with the Department for Transport and they have assured me the service will not be disrupted for Rugby rail users. I was quite supportive of the original decision but that was on the assumption there was a thorough tender process.

“Credit to Virgin for pursuing their case but now I think it’s important that the two inquiries can tell us exactly what went wrong.”
