Southam trio hope to be sole survivors

COLD water, hills and mud pits are among the obstacles waiting for a team of three Southam Leisure Centre staff setting out on a charity endurance race next month.

Richard Bell, Katie McIlvaney and Sam Went of lesiure centre operators Everyone Active will be taking on the Sole Destroyer, a 10km endurance race on a course designed to test off-road vehicles in aid of the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance. The challenge on March 4 includes brutal hill climbs, mud pits and a water holes as well as a wade across a 200m wade through a lake.

The team are used to helping other people train for marathons, but senior membership consultant Richard admits their weekly cross country training in January has come as a shock, but says it will all be worth it to support the air ambulance.

He said: “It’s harder than I thought. Hopefully the weather will lift a bit and it will be a nice day.

“We’ve had the helicopter land on the school field a couple of times. A lot of our members are horse riders who rely on it quite a lot but the air ambulance could help anyone who comes in here.”
