Step back in time

All of the youngsters at St Lawrence Primary School in Napton got involved in the day on Thursday last week which saw pupils travel back to the past.

Among the activities was the recreation of a Victorian- style classroom - including a strict teacher with a cane! There was also a room looking at the architecture and buildings of the Victorian age, arts and crafts, a music hall, old-fashioned cookery lessons with items from Mrs Beeton’s cookbook and morse code.

This was in addition to looking at a number of documents from the period while children and staff dressed up in Victorian clothing.

And the theme carried out throughout lunchtime when traditional Victorian fayre was served up.

The school’s administration officer, Sally Cole, said: “The reason we have this day is that the Victorian era is on the syllabus for key stage two pupils.

“The children do get a lot out of it. I think if they are pretending to do something then it sinks in a little more than if they were just reading all about it from text books.

“The day after, the headteacher was speaking to a lot of the children and all of them have told him how much they enjoyed it.

“I think it went down really well with all of the children with many of them getting into the spirit of the day.

“All of the staff dressed up inVictorian era costumes as well.

“It was a really great day and we were really pleased with how it all went .”
