A permanent bench in the village will mark his dedication to the community.
Mr Smith said: “I’ve really enjoyed serving the community and working with the councillors over the last 47 years.
“I’m coming up to 80 and I thought it was best to step aside and let younger people take over and introduce new ideas - after all, 47 years is a very long time.
“Stretton is a wonderful place and its village greens are a real credit.”
Mr Smith added: “I would like to thank everyone for all their support over the years and I hope Stretton continues to be as beautiful as it is now.”
Fellow councillors presented him with a celebration cake at the meeting on April 13.
Cllr Howard Roberts, Warwickshire County Councillor for Stretton, said Ian’s 47 years of service was a tremendous achievement.
“My memories from working with him over many years will be that of an independent-minded, tenacious parish councillor who always wanted the best for his village.
“Stretton has changed in those years, but Ian’s continued presence has ensured stability and experience,” he said.
Mr Smith also spent many years as a Rugby Borough Coucillor and a Warwickshire County Councillor.
