KILWORTH House Theatre continues their 2012 season with one of the most popular musicals of all time ‘The Sound of Music’ by Rodgers & Hammerstein.

Running from 21st August – 16th September 16 -the show is directed by Mitch Sebastian with musical direction by Garth Hall – the same creative team that were responsible for the Kilworth House Theatre production ‘Me and My Girl’ in June and July of this year. Completing the creative team is Lighting Designer Tim Bray, Set & Costume Design by Libby Watson and Sound Designer Chris Whybrow.

The part of Maria Von Trapp is played by Helena Blackman who came second in the BBC show How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?

Helena said: “I originally played the part of Maria while I was at secondary school when I was sixteen years old. Six years later I sang for Lord Lloyd Webber on the show and came second. Since that time I feel very honoured to have played many parts and toured around the country and many parts of the world. Now six years after the TV show I am thrilled to be finally playing Maria at Kilworth House Theatre, having heard so much about it from other actors who have played there. In another six years who knows I might be playing Mother Abbess!”

The cast which has been put together just for this show features stars of the West End stage including; Helena Blackman (Maria), Ian Knauer (Captain Georg von Trapp), Jan Hartley (Mother Abbess), Dom Hodson (Rolf), Hazel Gardner (Leisl), Russell Wilcox (Max) and Rebecca Caine (Elsa Schraeder).

Described by the Daily Telegraph in 2009 as “the best-kept secret in British theatre”, Kilworth House Theatre is privately owned and set in the grounds of Kilworth House Hotel in beautiful south Leicestershire. Theatre patrons are also able to book a pre-theatre dinner in the hotel Orangery or alternatively bring their own picnic to enjoy in the magnificent surroundings of the Kilworth estate.

The Sound of Music - Review by Lucie Green

The Sound of Music captured my heart from the first time I saw it aged three.

So taking my daughter to see it at the beautiful Kilworth House Theatre was a real treat and I got to see it through a child’s eyes once more.

As their final collaboration Rodgers and Hammerstein have created a true classic of musical theatre based on the heart warming, true story of the Trapp Family Singers.

Helena Blackman, runner-up in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Maria quest, gets to play the role at last and does it with ease.

She plays a young nun in an Austrian convert, who regularly misses her morning prayers preferring to go to the hills to sing.

Deciding that Maria is too high spirited and needs to learn something about the real world before she can take her vows, the Mother Superior dispatches her to serve as a governess for the children of the widowed Captain Von Trapp.

Whatever your age, book your tickets now for this treat.

For my four-year-old daugthter and I, it was the children who stole the show.

Don’t miss out on this show, you’ll be humming the songs for the next week...or two.
