The true soul of hip hop

IT WAS 25 years ago that De La Soul formed - their endurance is perhaps the best testament to their alternative hip-hop message of peace and harmony.

The trio of New York hip-hop superstars are playing the Kasbah in Coventry on July 4, and fans will have to act quickly to snap up tickets. The group rose to fame in the late 1980s with the album 3 Feet High and Rising, and in particular for their hit Me, Myself and I. The album wasn’t just a hit with hip-hop fans and was named as NME’s album of the year. Since then they’ve released several records and although they’ve avoided much of the hype that’s typical in the hip-hop industry, their catalogue is held in high esteem and even today albums such as Bluhloone Mindstate still appear in lists of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time.

In 2005 De La Soul collaborated with Gorillaz on their hit Feel Good Inc (for which they won a Grammy) and this tour the group are promoting First Serve, which was met with critical acclaim earlier this year.
