SIR Ian McKellen will return to Coventry’s Belgrade Theatre to celebrate his 50 year acting career with a one-off performance.

Entitled Back at the Belgrade - Ian McKellen Celebrates 50 Years of Acting, this unique performance will see the award-winning actor return to the Belgrade 50 years to the day after he first began his acting career on September 4, 1961 in a Belgrade production of A Man For All Seasons.

Throughout the show he will perform some of his favourite theatrical scenes, answer questions from the audience and talk about his hugely successful career, which has spanned Shakespearean stage roles and performances in films including X-Men and the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The Belgrade Theatre has been a registered charity since 1963 and all proceeds raised from the event will help support the venue. The proceeds will also help support the work that the theatre does with youngsters in the area.

Artistic director Hamish Glen said: “We’re extremely pleased to welcome Sir Ian McKellen back to the Belgrade to celebrate this milestone in his acting career. This show is a fantastic opportunity for people to learn more about this great British actor whose career started right here in Coventry.”

Hamish added: “We’re incredibly grateful to Sir Ian for holding this fundraising event in support of the Belgrade Theatre.

“For over 50 years we have been a home to up and coming young actors, many of whom, like Sir Ian, have become hugely respected and critically acclaimed artists.”
