Rugby Police are advising motorists to avoid the area around Dunchurch Road due to a huge funeral at St Marie's church causing a road closure.

The funeral, which has brought at least several hundred mourners, prompted a significant police presence and a closure on Dunchurch Road stretching from Kingsway to where it meets the gyratory.

At around 1.40pm the Advertiser attended and saw a number of police officers and vehicles were in attendance, with two stood outside the entrance to the church, two outside the entrance to the primary school, a van opposite and a police car parked on the gyratory exit to Dunchurch Road.

At 2pm a resident informed this newspaper that part of Dunchurch Road had been shut off by police.

And just after 3pm a spokesperson for Rugby Police said: "We are currently experiencing traffic delays in Rugby town centre.

"We'd ask motorists to please take alternative routes or avoid the area if possible.

"We will work to get things moving as soon as possible - thank you."
