Trees of Light launched in Leamington and Whitnash

Warwick district council chairman Cllr Richard Davies led the countdown to the switch-on outside Leamington Town Hall on Sunday afternoon.

And he gave a speech summing up the importance of the Rotary Club of Royal Leamington Spa’s Trees of Light campaign, which is supporting the Myton Hospices this year.

Cllr Davies said: “I am very pleased that this year the rotary club has chosen Myton Hospice as their charity to support with money that they get from the Trees of Light sponsorships.

“The Trees of Light are an excellent way for us to remember our loved ones and at the same time light up the town centre and support a deserving charity.

“It is my pleasure to be invited here to turn these lights on because I know that rotary does so much good in so many local communities by providing vital support for hard pressed local charities and because I know that Myton Hospice is such a worthy and much needed centre of excellent nursing care and compassion which deserves our respect and support.”

The event included performances by The Spa Brass Band and the Baptist church Choir while The Rev Paul Manuel, of St Mark’s church, blessed the tree.

The Leamington Rotary Club’s president Peter Barton and Myton Hospice’s community fundraiser Nigel Adams also made speeches.

*The first of the Rotary Club of Royal Leamington Spa’s Trees of Light switch-on events took place at St Margaret’s church in Whitnash on Saturday.

The tree was switched on by town mayor Parminder Birdi.

He was joined by club president Peter Barton, The Rev Richard Suffern and Nigel Adams of The Myton Hospices.
