Tributes to dedicated Maureen from The Workman in Rugby

Maureen Glen, who ran The Workman in Churchside Arcade for 26 years, died on January 5. The mother-of-one dedicated her time to the store and its customers, which sold workwear.

Maureen was born on May 26, 1939 and was the eldest daughter of Tommy and Rebecca McGlinchey. She had three sisters, Margi, Cathy and Lu, and a brother, Tommy.

She started her life in Easy Lane, Rugby, during the war and went to St Oswald’s School and then Westlands School.

Maureen was an acclaimed athlete at both schools and went on to run for Warwickshire and compete for England.

She left school aged 15 and began working in Brittans Shoe Shop. She then moved to Lodge Plugs before becoming a cook at St Mary Maternity Hospital in Harborough Magna.

Hardworking Maureen was then offered a job at Bexhill-Hill-On-Sea in Sussex, where she met a wonderful family called ‘The Hunnisetts’, who took Maureen under their wing and they stayed friends until she died.

At 18 years of age, Maureen returned to Rugby and married her partner, Jim, who had returned to Rugby from the army. On November 14 1961, Maureen gave birth to her daughter Tracie.

Tracie said: “She fitted in wherever she went and people loved her kind, gentle nature.

“She worked every single day and would do anything to help each and every customer that walked through the door.

“Mum was working in the shop right up until she passed away.

“Everyone loved mum, she was genuine, kind and sincere. I am sure she will be so, so missed.”

Maureen then got a job at Milletts in Market Place, Rugby, and she thoroughly enjoyed her work and made friends for life.

She was made redundant from Milletts after 20 years of service and decided to open her own business in 1990 called The Workman.

Maureen worked tirelessly to get the business off the ground, which was first based at the Indoor Market.

Tracie then gave birth to Maureen and Jim’s grandson, Josh, on October 29 1992.

When the Indoor Market closed, Maureen moved The Workman to Churchside Arcade where she worked every day until she died.

Maureen’s funeral will be held at Rainsbrook Crematorium on February 1 at 3pm.
