UPDATE: Police car hits woman in Rugby

A woman in her twenties has been rushed to hospital with serious head injuries after being hit by a police car on the Dunchurch Road in Rugby at lunchtime today (Monday March 7).

The car was responding to an emergency call at 12.10pm on the A45 Stretton on Dunsmore when the woman was hit. She has been taken by land ambulance to University Hospital Coventry and her next of kin have been informed.

The police officer who was driving was not injured.

Dunchurch Road has been closed by Warwickshire Police following the crash, and the road will be closed for the forseeable future.

There is no vehicle or pedestrian access to Shakespeare Gardens Junction, Kingsway Junction and Harris Lane off Overslade Lane.

Police at the scene say that arrangements have been made for pupils at Harris and Brooke Schools to leave safely and for school buses to pick students up.

Warwickshire Police say the case has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).
