Waitrose wants to build a supermarket in Bilton – bringing 150 jobs to the area.

Plans are being drawn up for the store, and people living near the site will get the chance to have their say.

Waitrose is working with Discovery Properties on plans to build on the old Bilton Social Club site on The Green.

The plans will be on show at a public exhibition at Bilton Methodist Church Hall, Main Street, on June 20 from 10am to 4pm and on Saturday June 21 from 10am to noon. Residents can also talk to the developers and give their views.

Roland Bohn, director of Discovery Properties, said: “Currently there is limited choice to the west of Rugby town centre and we believe Waitrose would provide not only Bilton but the surrounding area with a welcome option to the present retail choice.

“The site is currently vacant and is an area that will benefit from regeneration.

“Waitrose is keen to consult the community so that their views are taken into consideration before any formal planning application is submitted to the local authority.

“We believe that the new store will bring people in to the area and thereby increase footfall in Bilton. The development will also provide much-needed car parking.”

The Waitrose store would have a sales area of 20,000 sq ft and will create approximately 150 jobs for the Rugby area. It will include a car park for approximately 175 cars.

After the public consultation process the views of local people will be taken into account before detailed plans are submitted to the council.

Nigel Keen, of Waitrose, said: “We share Discovery’s confidence that the scheme would provide a substantial economic boost to the area, not only creating jobs, but helping to retain trade here.”

“We look forward to hearing the views of local people about our emerging plan.”
