Walk from Leamington in aid of Water Aid

After an 8am start tucking into a traditional Punjabi breakfast – including samosas, pakoras, chick peas and masala tea or coffee – at the Millennium Sweet House in High Street, walkers head off to the Talbot Inn on Rushmore Street – which is better known as Hector’s House.

Then it’s the Waterside Inn, near Queensway, the Dun Cow, Birmingham Road in Warwick, the Hatton Arms, the Durham Ox in Shrewley, The Tom o’ the Wood in Rowington, the Navigation in Lapworth, and ending up in Knowle at the Black Boy and the King’s Arms.

The Magi 4 Afrika Challenge is a private initiative organised by Charity Pubs dot Com to support WaterAid’s Burie Woreda project in Ethiopia and hopes to raise £25,000 to help bring safe water to around 37,000 people with a series of pub-related walks and events, the latest walk being in Birmingham.

Organiser Nick Wormald said the walk from Leamington on October 19 is raising money for a cause close to his heart.

In 1992 while on a group study exchange trip to Africa he saw the mighty Victoria Falls and its abundance of water, but said: “Then about 40 minutes away we saw a woman digging at a dried up river bed trying to get water.”

Nick, who has been involved with pubs in the Leamington area for a number of years, including the Newbold Comyn Arms, said: “It’s a healthy and fun way to raise money for Water Aid.

“If you start at the Millennium Sweet House the £10 donation fee includes breakfast. But people can join or leave the walk wherever they want – all we ask is that they make a suitable donation.

“We’re hoping to raise money by a series of walks, pub quiz nights and meal nights. I’m hoping to get lots of pubs involved and take part in regular events, such as a Boxing Day walk, which could be quite popular.

“It’s a boost for the pubs and landlords could tie in events with it. It’s also part of educating people about Water Aid”
