Warwick fundraiser honoured for long service

A tireless fundaraiser has been honoured for his long service during which £1,120,000 has been raised 
for Cancer Research UK.

Jeff Reading has spent 30 years on the Leamington and Warwick fundraising committee for Cancer Research UK and his duties have included chairman for ten years and treasurer for 19 years.

Mr Reading, aged 66, of Birmingham Road, Warwick, “was roped into it” by his mother-in-law Bet Barron, who along with hubbie Bill ran the Leopard in Bishops Tachbrook. He said: “The ladies’ darts team raised funds for Cancer Research and Bet got roped onto the fundraising committee and she eventually roped me onto it.”

Mr Reading, who worked in the county treasurer’s department, HR and managed business units, said: “It’s been extremely rewarding . I always say it’s an easy charity to fundraise for because so many people have been affected by cancer or know someone who has. Over the years we’ve had a fantastic committee to work with and raise money.”

Although when he was working, there were a few times - particularly with a big fundraising event - that juggling work and the committee would seem “a bit hard”.

Averil Ballinger, branch vice-chairman, said: “Over the years Jeff has been instrumental in raising the profile of this wonderful charity – a charity we all love and hope never to need.

“Jeff has helped organise many, many events. His latest idea is, and the evenings are always fully booked, a curry night. There is no end to his enthusiasm and imagination!”
