One of Warwickshire’s best known judges is retiring early– because he “just doesn’t want to do the job any more” and is “not happy with how things are going politically.”

Judges, barristers and court staff paid tribute at Warwick Crown Court last week to Judge Marten Coates, who is retiring after 16 years of administering justice.

Adrian Keeling QC said: “There was always a deeper aim on your part to do the right thing – to be harsh where necessary but, perhaps more difficult, to take a chance when it was warranted.”

Responding, Judge Coates said:“I have always preferred pragmatism to procedure.”

And after saying he will miss all the people he has worked with, he added: “I am retiring three years early because I just don’t want to do the job any more. I am not happy with the way things are going politically.”
