Warwick Castle - one of the named highlights of Warwickshire

The county, which boats Warwick Castle, the birthplace of Shakespeare and Kenilworth Castle was ranked sixth in the top 10 list - and is the only UK entry.

The English county received the accolade in Lonely Planet’s Best in Europe 2016 list, which highlights destinations worth a visit this summer.

The list also includes Peloponnese in Greece, Venice and The Dordogne and is compiled by Lonely Planet’s travel experts.

Editorial director, Tom Hall said included are destinations that have a buzz right now; overlooked spots that are poised to be the next traveller find; or perennial favourites with something fresh on offer.

“Warwickshire is best known for Stratford-upon-Avon - the birthplace of Shakespeare, but has so much more to offer,” he said.

“Check out the atmospheric remains of Kenilworth Castle, experience the wonderful mix of Tudor, Georgian and Victorian architecture of Charlecote Park, or sample some culinary wizardry at Michelin-starred The Cross.

“Whether travellers are seeking sublime scenery, historic market towns or perfect ruins, Warwickshire has them all, making the county one of our top European picks this summer.”

Stratford is in the midst of activities to 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.

And on June 16, the world-class Aviva Women’s Tour Cycling Race will pass through the county for the first time.

This year also marks the 750th anniversary of the Siege of Kenilworth Castle which will be marked across the town and district.
