Warwickshire schools break record as league tables are published

Pupils in Warwickshire achieved record GCSE results last year - and Kenilworth School was among the best.

League tables published this week show a five per cent increase in the number of pupils gaining five or more A* to C GCSE grades including English and maths, bringing the county total to 59 per cent.

A level results across the county also improved.

With 78 per cent of pupils receiving the benchmark five or more A* to Cs at GCSE, Kenilworth School performed best among state schools, coming third behind Southam College and Myton School in A level results.

Headteacher Hayden Abbott praised students. He said: “They were the best GCSE results we have ever had at Kenilworth School.

“Their success is particularly down to the relationship with staff. There is an expectation that students will work hard and a focus on exam performance but we also track the progress individual students are making and help those who are underachieving.”

Campion School continued its rise from 26 per cent of pupils with five key GCSEs in 2007. Headteacher Mark Feldman believes that although there had been a year-on-year improvement, the ‘value added score’ - the measure of pupils’ achievement since they started school - was most important. At 1051.4, Campion’s is the highest in the county.

Mr Feldman said: “The effort made by our pupils and their teachers is wonderful. We have seen many of our students work hard with great determination and excellent support given by their parents.”

Warwick School appears at the bottom of the league table because its pupils take an international version of GCSEs, which contains harder elements.

Calculated according to the points awarded for A level grades, the county average is now just above a C.
