Letter of the week: Ashlawn School pupils were told they could not see Olympic torch

In response to your article [School ‘ban’ on Olympic celebrations upsets mum, Advertiser July 5], I would like to clarify that Ashlawn School pupils were not given permission to watch!

In fact we had a newsletter sent through stating children would get an unauthorised absence mark if they did not turn up!

I feel that all schools should have given time off to those who wanted to watch this once in a lifetime opportunity with a time for them to be back into school.

Most local children could have been back at school for 9am! I deliberated over keeping my daughter off but unfortunately I chose for her not to get an unauthorised mark against her name.

After hearing that around only five in her class turned up that morning and they had to merge sessions I wish I had taken the risk!
