Letter of the week: is silence golden?

HAVE you travelled on the trains or buses lately? Often there is complete quiet in the carriage or bus.

Nobody seems to want to start a conversation. People are using their laptops, mobiles or texting etc.

On the other hand, in loud voices, two persons will inform everyone of their problems and private life.

This may be amusing and good for them. However it can be irritating to a majority of passengers.

Further, many thanks are due to the Lawrence Sheriff students who give up their seats for the elderly and infirm. It is most appreciated.

Finally it should be stated that communication is a necessity, even to offer the time of day or hello, but to stop for a chat is essential, this in spite of the fast moving lives we lead.
