Letter of the week: let’s fix the town centre

Yes, Debenhams are very welcome to Rugby. Could we spend the same sort of money with the help of government and European funds to keep the town centre a more attractive place to shop?

I always support the efforts of Rugby First in promoting the town, but we are like many others at this time facing financial cutbacks and low growth in the retail sector.

Rugby has a strong future if we can offer the same shopping environment as similar towns, and fill the town centre with craft stalls or German markets when this area is not used for our own market days.

One thing is for sure, the Clock Towers shopping centre must get rid of those unsightly plastic buckets on rainy days for good, as Rugby has a regional reputation for ‘shop indoors and still get wet’. Not the long term solution to increasing footfall in this historic town.
