Abandonments are mounting up at Warwick

After the abandonment of last Friday’s Ladies’ Day, Warwick lost a fourth Flat meeting this morning when the Gentlemen’s Day was called off due to “unsafe patches”.

Above average rainfall throughout the country this summer has meant the track has not had a chance to dry out since the opening meeting on Easter Monday, which started with soft ground and got steadily worse as the damp and blustery afternoon wore on.

Clerk of the course Sulekha Varma announced an inspection for 8am this morning and was keeping her fingers crossed that the already saturated course would escape further rain.

However, after 1.5mm fell overnight, it left her with no alternative but to abandon the meeting.

In a tweet, Varma said the rain had created “false patches of ground making it unsafe to race”.

Warwick’s next Flat meeting is the Ali Campbell Music Night on Tuesday August 21.
