Avenue players impress in county’s demolition of struggling Derbyshire

Warwickshire finished their Midlands Counties League campaign with an impressive six-rink 142-88 victory over Derbyshire at Welford BC to pick up all 22 points.

Avenue Leamington’s Adam Smith skipped clubmates Andy Strain, Andy Smith and Nuneaton’s Ian Harrison to a 26-15 win, while another Avenue player, Luke Horne, featured in a 23-20 success.

With one round of games remaining, Warwickshire look set to finish third, with Worcestershire already crowned champions.

Warwickshire managed back to back victories in their latest two county friendlies.

A 118-112 win at Buckinghamshire was followed up by a 133-123 win against Herefordshire at Stratford BC.

Warwickshire Vice-presidents went down to a 128-116 defeat against their Middlesex counterparts at Finchley Bowls Club, with their highest winning rink comprising Royston Andrews, Don Darby, Keith Rawlins and George Palmer.

They followed up with a 16-shot defeat at the hands of the South Warwickshire Bowls Association.

Brian Meacham, Bill Faulkner, Ian Bassnett and Mike Gilks claimed the highest winning rink.

On a day with when the temperature hit 30 degrees, Warwick Boat Club ladies’ triples match at home to Southam was curtailed after 12 ends with the hosts leading 32-23.

Boat Club’s highest winning rink - 12-6 - featured up-and-coming player Elizabeth Burridge, while Southam averted a whitewash with an 8-8 draw on the second rink, skipped by Sandy Couchman.

The home team’s other rink win came from Sylvia Murray and Jill Minett, who gained a 12-9 success despite playing short-handed.

John Henfrey (21-12), Nigel Roach (31-13) and Malcolm Welch (27-13) claimed emphatic victories to help Lillington’s men to a 127-111 victory over Royal Leamington Spa, who replied through Andrew Woodward (17-15), Bill Griffin (30-10) and Nigel Edkins (31-13).
