A new boxing club opened in Rugby last Tuesday. Genesis ABC, based at Impact Dance Studios in Mill Road, will run for two days a week at first, increasing as demand grows to seven days a week.

Coaching the boxers will be Franco Wanyama, an ex professional who won the WBF world title from Johnny Nelson in the early 1990s.

He used to be a regular sparring partner with the Klitchkos and won the Commonwealth title. He also represented Uganda in the Olympics.

Organiser and chairman Jon Finch said: “We believe this to be a really positive step for the club to put boxing back in Rugby.

“We also have two really good sponsors on board, one being PAB Coventry Ltd who have given us funds for kit and equipment and the other Concur Recruitment Ltd who have given us funds to help us pay to register boxers and affiliate the club.”

The club is going to be run as a non profit organisation, supported by volunteers.

It has taken a lot of work to set up the new club, which will initially train on Tuesday and Thursdays.

Mr Finch added: “I am going to be opening up a class to run with the school term, which will be for children aged 7-14.

“This will be on the basis we have enough people and will be run with training development logs for the individuals so we can monitor and reward progression.”
