BOXING: Bakehouse boxers win University and Midlands titles

Rugby’s Bakehouse Boxing Club had another great weekend with one of their boxers winning the university championships in Wolverhampton and another becoming the Midlands champion.

Their first boxer in the ring was Daniel Walshe. He boxed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday and won all three bouts to be crowned the university boxing champion at under 64kg.

Friday’s opponent was Thomas Ivors from Liverpool University and Daniel won by unanimous decision.

On Saturday Daniel beat Owen Davis from Leicester University, by second round tko.

Then he followed that with another success on Sunday when he beat Connor Jopling from Leeds Beckett University, a fight which Daniel won by another tko.

The second boxer in action for the BakehouseLane-based club was Ben Gidley, last year’s National champion.

Ben was drawn in the Midlands youth final against Suleman Hughes, a tough boxer from Odells boxing club in Birmingham.

These two fighters met last year in a close bout that could have gone either way, but in the end the decision was given to Suleman.

However this time Ben completely dominated all three rounds of the contest, winning by a unanimous decision.

Ben will go through to the national quarter finals to be held at Ryton Sports Connexion starting tomorrow ( Friday February 14) .

Bakehouse coach Lee Evans is full of praise for both winner.

“I would like to add that both boxers are very dedicated and always great listeners,” he said.

“Daniel has been travelling back and forth from Cardiff university for the last two years .

“Their hard work and the level of boxing we have in place at Bakehouse will see Rugby producing boxing champions for years to come.”
