Quartermaine and Williams claim Central England titles in style

Cleary’s Boxing Gym duo Danny Quartermaine and Lewis Williams both claimed Youth Central England belts on Saturday with comprehensive points victories in Evesham.

Quartermaine dominated his lightweight clash with champion Macauley Owen, with his all-action style failing to give his talented opponent a moment’s peace.

Owen came into the bout boasting an impressive record of 18 wins from 24 fights and backed by a coachload of supporters.

However, despite claiming in the build-up to the fight that he had nothing to worry about against his “technically poor” opponent, Owen was unable to keep Quartermaine at arm’s length, with the Cleary’s boxer remaining on the front foot throughout.

Williams, meanwhile, drew high praise from coach Ady Bush after outpointing Bryn Dalton in their light heavyweight clash.

Williams continually rocked back the Chesterfield boxer with his jab, forcing standing counts in the second and third rounds.

“Not since Lennox Lewis have I seen a jab like that,” said Bush. “It was like a piston.

“The referee said his jab was amazing.”

Both boxers have to defend their belts within the next eight weeks, but Bush said they would not be up for grabs tomorrow when Quartermaine and Williams will be in action at a Cleary’s-promoted show at the Leamington Assembly.

“Both boxers did really well and are a credit to the club,” added Bush. “Tomorrow will give them a chance to show their belts off to their mates before they have to defend them.”

Meanwhile, fellow Cleary’s boxers Jake Finch and Harry McKay were both in action at the weekend, with Finch maintaining his unbeaten run by beating Christ the King’s Liam Burton and McKay taking part in his first skills bout.

 Doors open for tomorrow’s Cleary’s Boxing Gym’s show at 4pm, with boxing beginning at 5pm.

Tickets cost £11.
