Quartermaine heads into semi-finals after county win

Danny Quartermaine was crowned Warwickshire champion after beating Capitol ABC’s Levi Chandler in his opening ABA Elite Youth Championships encounter at Exhall, Coventry.

Chandler is a two-time Midland champion and national semi-finalist, but 16-year-old Quartermaine belied his inexperience - he is still ranked as a novice - to quickly put his opponent on the back foot.

Chandler struggled to cope with the Cleary’s ABC boxer’s relentlesss pressure and was reduced to spoiling tactics and holding in the opening round.

Quartermaine maintained his onslaught in the second round and landed with several combinations, one of which rocked Chandler back on to the ropes.

As the round entered its dying seconds, Quartermaine caught the Capitol boxer with a left hook which necessitated a standing count and, chastened by his experience, Chandler spent the final round looking to hang on until the final bell.

Quartermaine deservedly got the nod from the judges and will now go on to face Tamworth’s Oliver Cassidy in the Midlands semi-finals at Lea Hall Social Club in Birmingham on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Quartermaine will be one of several Cleary’s boxers involved in a dinner show against a combined Royal Navy/Marines team at Warwick School on Saturday February 22.

He will be part of a Cleary’s select team which, in addition to fighters from the Wise Street Gym, will feature the cream of Midlands boxing talent, including Sam Bowen who was involved in a controversial encounter with Sean Greenfield at The Assembly last month.

Dinner tickets cost £50 and include a four-course meal, with boxing-only tickets available at £11.
