Caswell gets 424 votes when one will do

The nine-year-old’s achievements this year, including a bronze in the world championships, have prompted a record 424 nominations in the under-18 female category, comfortably eclipsing all her rivals.

However, the good news for fellow nominees is that it does not matter how many votes you get.

As long as a sportsperson or team get a single nomination their achievements will be judged by our voting panel, who will then award the prizes on merit, not on the size of our postbag.

And, with British Elite Youth triathlon champion and last year’s under-18 female winner Megan McDonald just one of the names she is up against, Caswell will be in good company if she makes the final shortlist.

There is still plenty of time for you to put forward your sporting heroes, whether they be internationally recognised, dominant on the local scene or unsung.

Nominations of no more than 150 words outlining the achievements of the individual or team are invited in the nine categories listed below.

Nominations should be marked “Sports Awards” and include the category for which the person is being put forward, along with your name, address and phone number.

Nominees must live, go to school or play for a club in the district and all entries must be received by Friday December 6.

With your help we will draw up a shortlist, with the winners being revealed at a ceremony at the Spa Centre on Friday January 17, 2014.

There, we will also announce the much-coveted sports personality of the year, won last year by Tom Sykes.
