Centre stage for Handy

Kenilworth’s association croquet team bowed out in the first round of the national Longman’s Cup with a narrow defeat at Blewbury in Oxfordshire

The singles were even at three games each with Kenilworth’s Cliff Daniel, John Handy and Philip Wood successful.

However, in the deciding doubles match, the Blewbury pair just got the better of Peter Dennis and Handy.

The following day, Handy was again in action as one of six players competing for the first golf croquet tournament of the season at Crackley Lane.

It took on an all-play-all format with some closely fought games.

Ray Clipson came third with three wins but the title was not decided until late in the day when Handy beat Mervyn Harvey to take the title with four wins and a tie to his opponents’ four wins.

Handy now moves forward to the regional heat of the Centre Stage competition.
