Cowley just misses the British record

Athletes from Rugby and Northampton Athletics club were in the medals at the British Masters Indoor Pentathlon.

The event at Lee Valley Track at Pickett’s Lock, London, attracted 76 entries from pentathletes from all over the country including four from the R&NAC.

Sally Hines was first off the blocks in the W60m and acheived her best score of the day, 893pts. Lesley Willis, in the W50 class struggled to find form finishing in 13.15s.

Next up was high jump; Sally cleared 1.09m, while Lesley cleared a satisfactory 1.21m. In the shot Sally putted only just below her PB at 6.30m and Lesley peaked at 7.63m. Long jump was the fourth discipline with Sally leaping to 2.97m, and Lesley 3.86m. The final event was the 800m with Sally recording a time of 3m 41.02. Her overall performance was only 13pts shy of her peak in 2011. Lesley finished her competition in style to win in 3:55.5s and confirm bronze position.

Dave Cowley, competing for the first time at M65 led the hurdles from start to finish, recording a pleasing 10.8s PB. Frank Blackwell (M55) finished second recording 12.0s (PB). Dave was second in the long jump (4.18m), while Frank cleared 4.15m. Frank’s shot was a respectable 7.31m while Dave produced his best ever performance of 9.98m. Frank struggled to attain 1.24m in the high jump, while Dave cleared 1.33m and narrowly missed 1.36m which cost him dearly at the end.

After coming second in the 1,000m Dave took gold with 3463pts, just 31pts shy of the Britich recod. Frank in his first indoor competition came second in the M55.
