Blistering batting display led by captain’s century
Warwickshire Cricket League T20 - Round 2
Rugby v Coleshill
Rugby stormed into the regional semi-finals of the WARCL Twenty20 tournament, after a blistering batting display led by captain Owen Edwards’ century.
The Webb Ellis Roaders won the toss, chose to make first use of glorious batting conditions, but lost Charlie Robards to the second ball of the match.
However, Matt Ewer (27) gave his side some early momentum and, when he fell with the score on 50, Edwards and George Mackenzie took control in an unbroken stand of 170 in just 14.2 overs.
Mackenzie (50no) played the supporting role, while Edwards struck 12x4 and 7x6 in his unbeaten 135 from 63 balls, which carried Rugby to 220-2.
Coleshill’s batsmen came out firing in response, with top order runs from Muhammed Fahim (44) and Sheraz Khan (52no), but the required rate was always out of their grasp.
Tom Wilkins (3-0-17-2) was the pick of Rugby’s attack, his wickets including a great catch by Rob Stipanovic in the deep, while Matt Johnson (2-28) was also in the wickets.
Coleshill’s skipper Sunny Ahmed hit a rapid 41, but it was too little too late, as his side closed on 176-6 and Rugby won by 44 runs to book an encounter with Bablake in the next round.
