Young Brandon Bees Cycle Speedway riders raced to a brilliant double success in last Sunday’s Chris Allen Memorial Trophy at Coventry’s Hearsall Common track.

Persistent overnight rain cleared in time for the 1pm start and heavy conditions greeted the riders in the early stages. However, this did not stop Bees riders Louis Westhead, who superbly won the under 8s final, and Jony Middleton, who took third in the under 11s final, in another successful day for the Bees.

Westhead, just 7 years old, once again beat more experienced riders in racing away to an accomplished unbeaten 20-point maximum score. He won all his races and was never headed as he added the Chris Allen Trophy to his Coventry under 8s championship he won at Brandon last month.

Middleton, the Coventry under 11s champion, again produced an all-action display as he narrowly failed to add another title to his name. He underlined his growing reputation and recovered well after dropping points in his opening two rides.

The Daventry youngster, who attends the Rugby Free School, now mounted on his own machine, then finished in fine style by winning his final three outings. He posted 18 points to claim a third place podium finish.

In all, the newly revived Brandon Bees club fielded no fewer than 16 riders in the Chris Allen Memorial event, an astonishing figure for a new club in any sport. Sundays meeting was staged in honour of an original Brandon Bees rider who collapsed and died whilst racing in 1973. He was just 18 years old.

The best of the rest was the dashing Cameron Gill, who took an outstanding fourth pace in the hotly contested under 16s final. He opened with two heat wins to emerge the championship leader after all riders had completed two rides and eventually totalled 17 points to just miss the bronze medal.

There were also fine performances from Owen Gregory, Tom Savage, Lewis Middleton and Lincoln Collins, whilst Joseph Augustus produced his best display to date, including featuring in the best race of the day to round his opponent on the final bend in heat 20 of the under 11s final to loud applause from the gallery.

The Bees were also cheered to welcome newcomers Jake Hodder and Max Augustus to competitive action. All the Bees riders are products of the Saturday morning `Dirt Bike Club`, which has brilliantly ignited the return of the sport in the Rugby area.

The Dirt Bike Club, which last Saturday saw more newcomers take to the track, races into action again this Saturday morning (10am-11.30am) at the Brandon Bees track, Bretford Playing Fields, Bretford, near Rugby, CV23 0LA.
