Character and spirit earn Brakes a point at Gloucester

Leamington boss Paul Holleran has heaped praise on his side’s fighting spirit after they came back from 3-1 down to snatch a draw at Gloucester City on Monday.

Holleran made sweeping changes from the XI which held play-off chasing Boston two days earlier and saw Brakes quickly go two goals down.

Ricky Johnson halved the deficit but it needed goals in the final five minutes from Danny Newton and Matt Dodd to salvage a draw and Holleran accepted his decision to rest Craig Owen had put the visitors on the back foot.

“We were a little bit open and you could tell that for the first 20 minutes,” he said. “But then we settled down.

“It wasn’t the best performance but the players showed character and spirit. They deserve a lot of credit for having the desire to keep going and get the draw we just about deserved.”

Holleran is hoping to continue Monday’s feelgood factor into tomorrow’s final game of the season, with Colwyn Bay the visitors to the New Windmill.

“To come back that late on was a great feeling, it’s not something we’ve done much of this season.

“Now we need to round off the season with another positive result.”
