Finalists in Girls’ Futsal Challenge Cup
Some of Rugby Town’s under 16 girls took part in the Girls’ Futsal Challenge Cup at the National Futsal Arena in Birmingham.
In the opening game they beat Crossfield from Cheshire 5-1, then Bartestree from Hereford 6-1, both good teams in their leagues. The game against Spurs Ladies, saw 100 mile an hour pure futsal and it was great to see Rugby matching a team that win everything. Although they lost this game 3-2 they still went into the semi-finals. Coming second in their group meant a game against the UK Futsal Champions team from Spurs again. This saw more non-stop great football from both teams - from keeper to all players. Rugby won this game 4-1, which was a great achievement to reach the final.
This was played with only a ten-minute break and for a team that has not been to training since cup final day five weeks ago, they give it their all, losing out to another Spurs team 3-2. Bronya’ s 15 yard shot was short of the goal by five yards when the full time buzzer went, and with just one more second of play might have forced extra time.
Nothing can take away the way the team played and gained a few admirers throughout from their football. It was a testing day against top UK teams and an excellent day out.
