Tournament win on penalties
Rugby Town Colts Under 7s took part in the Central Ajax tournament in Warwick on Saturday.
The opening game against the hosts resulted in a comfortable 5-0 win, with goals shared between Charlie Mawby and Liam Ollerenchal. Then came a fantastic battling display against Leamington Brakes. James Eagle was amazing between the sticks and Josh Gorbutt solid at the back. Kaydon Barker and Elliot McGlinchey worked endlessly in midfield to earn a 0-0 draw.
The third game with Warwick Juniors was one-way traffic, George Hatfield having his season best prefomance starting the scoring and Zak McCaffefty adding the second, Charlie with two, a hat-trick for Liam and Elliot’s left footer into the bottom corner made it a decisive 7-1 win. The final group game with Welford was a nail-biter. Elliot hit the post twice, Kaydon came close but Charlie scored the winner with the last kick.
Into the semi final against Baginton Lions, which was settled also by a single goal by Kaydon’s sweet left foot, with a big thanks to James who made a vital save late on.
Colts met Leamington Brakes in the final, which was end to end. The Colts took the lead through Charlie. George, Zak and Josh never stopped running, but Leamington equalised in the last second. So the game was decided on penalties. James was unbelievable, Elliot and Liam scored theirs and James removed his gloves to slot home to lift the the boys’ third trophy in a month.
Brilliant Jake and boys!
