Victory in Challenge Bowl Final
Challenge Bowl Final
U21s: Rugby Town 2 Mickleover Sports 1
Rugby Town JFC Under U21 completed the first part of double on Saturday when they comfortably beat Mickleover Sports to lift the Midland League Challenge Bowl. The score really does not reflect the total domination that Town had. Having said that, goals win games and Town nearly came unstuck when Mickleover equalised in the second half. Only for Town to up their game again and score in the last few minutes.
Mickleover, who play in the North East Division of the U21 league, had just missed out on winning their league so on paper it was going to be a tough game. But it never turned out that way. Although Mickleover were quite a physical side, they never matched Town’s domination of the football.
Rugby went ahead in the 11th minute when some good build-up play freed Charlie Cook and his shot squirmed through the keeper’s hands and landed in the corner of the net.
Chances also fell to Harry Reiley and with both fullback pushing on Mickleover were struggling. Unfortunately the chances came and went and whilst Rugby were dominant the single goal margin at half time was never going to be enough.
It was proved as Mickleover came out a more determined side and were in fact dominating the early part of the half. They equalised in the 78th minute when, after a shot was brilliantly saved by Bailey, the Mickleover 9 was first to pounce and head home.
Rugby scored the winner on 87 minutes after another surging run by McGahey saw Harry Reilly completely free to pop the ball beyond the keeper.
A fantastic display watched by a crowd of just over 100 who celebrated well at the end!
The 21s go for the double this coming Thursday when they take on the Champions of the North Eastern Division Heath Hayes in the Play-off Final. The game is being held at Coleshill FC Kick-off is at 7.30pm.
