Hayden marks his first appearance with a goal

With seven players unavailable, Racing Club Warwick manager Michael Hayden was forced to come out of retirement for last Monday’s home clash with Coventry Copsewood.

He made an instant impression with a goal in the 2-2 draw but said it was not something he would be repeating in a hurry.

“It was needs must,” said Hayden. “I’ve lost four yards since I last played but I’m still a fox in the box.

“Tuesday was a write-off, though, and I came here to be a manager.

“I’ve got to trust in the players I’ve got.”

Following on from the heavy defeat at home to Southam, Hayden was again bemoaning his side’s defensive frailties with Copsewood fighting back from two goals down to force a draw they barely merited.

“We were 2-0 up and cruising,” he said. “We switched off for ten minutes and two basic mistakes have killed us.

“Our quality going forward is very good but we’ve got a very young back four and we lack the maturity to shut up shop.”

Former Leamington youngster Josh Tiff was also on target for Racing Club, but Copsewood were thrown a lifeline with a contentious penalty which was initially saved by Ryan Bennett only for Danny Fraser to convert the rebound.

Substitute Connell Farrell equalised with ten minutes left to leave Racing Club still searching for their first home league victory of the campaign.

Hayden’s side return to action tomorrow with a trip to Pershore, followed by a home clash with Earlswood on Tuesday evening.
